In October 2023, he was taken into custody by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on charges related to money laundering and his involvement in excise policy. His time in custody has been prolonged until October 27. Previously, he had openly dared the ED to arrest him and investigate his role.

In 1994, Sanjay Singh established the Azad Samaj Seva Samiti in Lucknow. He asserts that he focused on creating job opportunities for underprivileged individuals. Sanjay Singh accused Punjab’s revenue minister, Bikram Singh Majithia, of involvement in the drug trade and criticized him for not effectively addressing the drug problem in Punjab.
In response, Majithia filed a defamation lawsuit against Sanjay Singh, Arvind Kejriwal, and Ashish Khetan. Later on, the president of AAP, Arvind Kejriwal, apologized to Majithia for the accusations made by his party against him.
In January 2018, Sanjay Singh became a Rajya Sabha MP from Delhi. During the Delhi 2020 elections, he was appointed as the campaign in-charge along with Pankaj Gupta, who became the campaign director.
As an MP, Singh has allocated funds from his MPLADs for various projects in his constituency. In 2018, he donated one crore rupees from his MPLAD fund and one month’s salary towards Kerala Flood Relief.
In January 2023, a special court in Sultanpur district of Uttar Pradesh sentenced him to three months in jail for a case filed in 2001. He is currently out on bail.
