On the Education Department’s website, borrowers can sign up for updates on the student loan forgiveness process, including when the application will be available. US Department of Education spokesperson says it can take around eight weeks for a borrower’s debt to be discharged once they have provided all the necessary information. There will be a deadline of Dec. 31, 2023, for submitting an application for forgiveness.

Gather records

If you received a Pell Grant when you were an undergraduate, you can check on’s grants tab if you qualify for the $20,000 relief. Take a screenshot or print out your Pell Grant confirmation if you received one. To ensure you have dropped your debt by the correct amount, you should also print out a screenshot of your current student loan balance.

Ensure your loans qualify

Approximately 37 million borrowers will be eligible for forgiveness if they have loans that are covered by the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program. There are two types of federal student loans in that category: Direct Stafford Loans and Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Student Loans. As part of the Direct program, you are also eligible to obtain relief for Parent Plus loans and Grad loans.

Commercially held Federal Family Education Loans (FFELs) are held by private companies, not the government, meaning the government does not hold your debt. It may be a good idea to consolidate your loans into Direct Loans sooner rather than later in order to qualify for forgiveness sooner rather than later.

Make sure you qualify based on income

Last week, President Biden announced that many federal student loan borrowers would be eligible for some forgiveness. Your forgiveness would be capped at $10,000 if you didn’t receive a Pell Grant, which provides financial aid for low-income undergraduate students; your forgiveness would be capped at $20,000 otherwise. Applicants must earn less than $125,000 per year, or be married couples or heads of households earning less than $250,000.
