On Sunday, Team Sri Lanka officials confirmed that Danushka Gunathilaka had been arrested on charges of sexual assault while participating in the T20 World Cup in Australia.
According to reports, Gunathilaka, 31 years old, was arrested and taken to the Sydney City police station in the early hours of Sunday following an investigation into an alleged sexual assault of a woman.
The Sri Lankan team has left Australia without Daushka Gunathilaka due to his arrest for alleged rape, a source close to the Sri Lankan team told PTI.
Sri Lanka’s team was eliminated from the tournament on Sunday after losing to England.
As a left-handed batter, the player was out for a duck in the first round of the ongoing T20 World Cup.
Despite the Lankan team’s qualification for the Super 12 stage, he was ruled out due to injury. The Lankan team finished fourth in Group 1.
Police from New South Wales have also announced the arrest of an unidentified Sri Lankan national on their website.
“A Sri Lankan national has been charged following an investigation into the alleged sexual assault of a woman in Sydney’s east last week,” according to the report.
Earlier this week, a 29-year-old woman was sexually assaulted at a residence in Rose Bay, according to the website.
It is alleged that on the evening of Wednesday 2 November 2022, after communicating with him for a number of days via an online dating application, the woman was sexually assaulted by the man.
“As part of ongoing investigations, specialist police conducted a crime scene examination at an address in Rose Bay yesterday. After further inquiries, a 31-year-old man was arrested at a hotel in Sussex Street, Sydney, just before 1am today (Sunday 6 November 2022),” the report stated.
The Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has not yet issued a statement.
