Mitchell High School Shooting Hoax Active Shooting Calls
Thursday morning, a prank phone call was made to Mitchell dispatch claiming a shooting had taken place at the high school. The call was received at 9:25 am, about two minutes after dispatch received it. Emergency personnel arrived at Mitchell High School about ten minutes later. The phone call claimed multiple students were shot.
By 9:28 a.m., officers determined the call was a hoax. According to the Mitchell Department of Public Safety, the phone call was fake, and officers are working to resolve the issue. There was multiple prank school shooting phone calls made Thursday to schools in South Dakota, including those in Sioux Falls and Brookings.
According to Mitchell Superintendent Joe Graves, Mitchell’s emergency personnel are outstanding and its contingency plans for an active shooting situation worked perfectly. According to Mitchell Police Chief Mike Koster, the prank was not just isolated to Mitchell High School, as other schools in the state received similar calls.
It brought a moment of terror to parents of students at MHS, even though the report of a shooting turned out to be a hoax. A number of parents could be seen exchanging words with officers while officers patrolled the perimeter of the high school. A number of authorities from the Mitchell Police Department, Davison County Sheriff’s Office, and South Dakota Highway Patrol responded.
The person who made the calls appears to be from out of state, Public Information Officer Sam Clemens said at a press conference in Sioux Falls on Thursday after officers responded to a fake shooting at Sioux Falls Lincoln.
“It’s hard to understand or know the intent,” Clemens said. “It’s a case-by-case basis as to why a person is doing it.” He added that locating the person responsible for the call is “not as easy as TV or the movies make it seem.”
A Brookings police press release reported that “a male with a foreign accident” had reported an active shooter at Brookings High School, but the school resource officer on site observed no signs of violence.
“We take these reports seriously and an extensive investigation will be conducted by local and federal agencies,” the release said.
