The first woman to hold both offices of governor and attorney general of Michigan, she served as the 47th governor of Michigan from 2003 to 2011 and as attorney general from 1999 to 2003 as a member of the Democratic Party.
In January 2017, she was hired as a CNN political contributor. She hosts the Current TV series The War Room with Jennifer Granholm. During his announcement of his intention to nominate Granholm to lead the Department of Energy on 15th December 2020, President-elect Joe Biden announced the nomination. The United States Senate confirmed her on February 25, 2021, by a vote of 64 to 35.
